
In the 16
th century this was the site of the
Cowgate Port, one of the entrances through the city walls. The entrance would have been between the
Travelodge and the building on the left (where the silver car is). The road to the north is St Mary's Street, formerly St Mary's
Wynd, and a 19
th century photograph of the same location can be found
here. The spire of St Patrick's Church can be seen in the background of both photographs.
